Far Cry 2 offers a brutal and engrossing open world shooter, in a fictitious war-torn African country. Instead of a heroics adventure, it’s about survival, realism and the impact of war. You are a mercenary, set loose in the country with one mission: assassinate arms dealer, known as The Jackal. The trouble is, every action you take, will either make or break you, with the warring factions, determining the route your adventure will take.
The large, interconnected world is made up of deserts, jungles, rivers, settlements and abandoned places, with a seamlessly stitched, without any loading screen, in-game world. It boasts realistic fire spreading, dynamic weather effects and the sun can be setting one minute and the moon over the country’s inhabitants the next; all creating unpredictable, deadly battle sequences. Even weapons wear out over time, vehicles need to be looked after, and to top it all off, you might contract malaria periodically.
The weapons used encourage a range of approaches in combat, either using them to snipe from a safe distance, creep into buildings and use the melee weapons or cause carnage using grenades and direct assaults. Enemy AI reacts realistically too – enemies will attempt to surround and cover themselves as well as react to changes, such as trying to flee if too pressured. Planning your journey, exploring and managing supplies are critical for surviving this difficult and hostile world.
